28.01.2008/ After yesterdays Team Time Trail Quickstep also controlled todays second stage of the Tour of Qatar. Boonen broke away and in the breakaway he was accompanied by five teammates. Tom Boonen outsprinted his fellow escapees at the line after a stage with an incredible pace of 55.51 km/h. Boonen also took over the overall lead.

The second stage started in Al Zubarah and finished after 137.5 kilometres at the Doha Golf Club. After three kilometres and under the influence of a strong tail wind that would play a major role most of the day, the bunch broke up into several groups. In the front group Quickstep was represented by six riders including defending champ Wilfried Cretskens, Tom Boonen and overall leader Matteo Tosatto.

The leading group of 24 men saw its lead grow rapidly. After 15 kilomtres the front group had a lead of 35 seconds on a first chasing group and 1' 30" on a second group. The first intermediate sprint, situated at Madinat Al Shamal (km 21), was won by Steven De Jongh (Quickstep) beat Tom Veelers (Skil - Shimano) and Matteo Tosatto (Quickstep).

After 50 kilometres the front group only had left a lead of 12 seconds on the first chasing group. The race leaders rode an average speed of 57 kilometres during the first hour. After 62 kilomtres the chasing group caught the escapees. Behind them dropped riders would remain between 1’20 and 1’35 adrift. The second bonus sprint was claimed by Boonen ahead of Veelers and De Jongh.

After 105 kilometres serious business started again with only thirty kilometres to go when the Quick Step team eased up the pace. Only thirteen riders managed to remain in the front group: Cretskens, Boonen, De Jongh, Hulsmans, Wynants (All Quickstep), Napolitano (Lampre), Backstedt and Sutton (Slipstream), Van Avermaet, Roelandts and Tjallinghi (Silence-Lotto), as well as Pichot (Bouyges Telecom).

The race was really fast, the average speed in the second hour was 55,8 kilometres per hour. After 108 kilometres the front group had a lead of 12 seconds on a first chasing group with around 30 riders. The gap remained stable and with 5 kilomtres to go the front group extended its lead to 20 seconds.

The decision was made by a sprint between the strong men of the stage. Well launched by his blue and white train, Tom Boonen conquered his first individual success of this 2008 edition and his 13th stage win in Qatar. The Belgian rider outsprinted his compatriot Van Avermaet and Italian rider Napolitano. Boonen also takes command of the general classification and now has a lead of 9 seconds on his team mate De Jongh. He also claims the points silver jersey while Van Avermaet captures the blue jersey for the best young rider.

Tom Boonen said after the stage: "It was very hard, very hard. The wind was perfect to make a big mess today. Immediately from kilometre zero, the entire team attacked. There was a battle during 60 kilometres, and then a big bunch got back and it was a little bit quieter with the wind in a different direction. On the last 30 kms, we just exploded everything. Everybody was completely ’full gas’. It’s always fast here but its better when you attack yourself. In that way, you’re sure that you’re at the front.
I stopped my season earlier last year and did the same training as last year so I had a bit more rest. Now, my shape isn’t as good as the last three years. Anyway, that’s what I thought before winning this one. But I do think I have more progression for the upcoming classics. There’s still a long way to go before the main objectives. I hadn’t planned to go 100% at the beginning of the season but here you don’t have the choice…"
