The first major spring classic, Milan-Sanremo, is scheduled to be ridden in ten days' time. It is Oscar Freire's (Rabobank)
favorite race. He won it twice (2005 an 2007). So far, however, he had not been able to get into the right shape. Oscar had
not yet won a race causing doubts in the process. But after Wednesday afternoon, "Oscarito" can again take on the entire world,
because he won the first stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico – which is also his favorite stage race – in a very impressive
way. Hence, he has found the right shape just in time. Freire will again be listed among the top-favorites in La Primavera.
Tinkoff's Mikhail Ignatiev attacked after 38 kilometres and was joined by Krivtsov (AG2R) eight kilometres later.
After 108 kilometres they had a maximum lead of 7 minutes and 45 seconds. That was the sign for the sprinter teams to start
the chase. With 25 kilometres to go the escapees had la lead of less than 3 minutes and Ignatiev tried to get rid of Krivtsov
but the Ukranian rider was able to stay with the Russian young gun.
They started to work together again but the gap was getting smaller and smaller. With 12 kilometres to go they had less
than a minute and soon after that they got caught and the Freire show could begin.
Freire outclassed a group consisting of elite sprinters in the streets of Civitavecchia. All world class sprinters are
present: Alessandro Petacchi, Robbie McEwen, Tom Boonen, Gerald Ciolek, Baden Cooke. In fact, only Gert Steegmans and Thor
Hushovd do not appear on the list of participants. Those two opted for Paris-Nice, which was made more difficult this year,
and they have already been successful there. Freire beat his opponents in a way which is typical for him. He used his individual
power to maneuver himself into the front ranks of the pack by stepping fiercely on the pedals during the final kilometers
of the race.
For a moment it looked like McEwen would ruin the Rabocamp's party when he initiated an acceleration at the 400 meter mark
from the finish, shortly before a very dangerous turn in the road. McEwen had a fifteen meter lead coming out of the final
corner, but he ran out of gas on the final straight road. Oscar Freire blasted past him on his right, Petacchi on his left.
Subsequently, the Italian came up just short, but then again the difference was quite clear, against the three-time world
champion, who responded very jubilantly to his first victory of the season.
"Oscar has been saying for about a week that he is feeling well, but of course he was disappointed about the fact that
he had not yet won a race," confessed his sports director Erik Breukink. "Hence, this victory was very well-timed.
This takes away all pressure. Who knows what else will be in store for us later this week." Breukink was rather brief but
to the point about the first stage. "The team rode a strong race. When Igantiev and Krivtsov had an eight-minute lead, we
also positioned some of our men in the front so as to co-operate in the pursuit. That caused Gerben Löwik and Theo Eltink
to lose their position in the first group, but of course Oscar's victory was a good compensation."
