13.08.2008/Carlos Sastre will wear the back number 1 at this years Vuelta a Espana. Sastre will start as number 1 because last years winner, Denis Menchov (Rabobank) will not defend his title. The winner of  this years Tour de France will have to face the winner of this years Giro d'Italia, Alberto Contador (Astana).

Vuelta a Espana organiser Unipublic released a list with the names of the participating teams and their captains. Unipublic announced that apart from Carlos Sastre (CSC - Saxo Bank), Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne), Alberto Contador (Astana), Cadel Evans (Silence - Lotto) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre) will start at the 3 week stage race. 
 
Earlier Unipublic excluded the Spanish Scott - American Beef team.  The team use to race under the name Saunier Duval - Scott but left this years Tour de France after Riccardo Riccò tested positive for CERA.
 
The Vuelta Espana starts at August 30 with a Team Time Trial in Granada.
