Philippe Gilbert (Francaise des Jeux) is in the winning mood. The Belgian rider took his fourth victory this season today.
Gilbert won the GP Le Samy after he closed the gap to five escapees and surprised the sprinters as he immediately opened the
sprint and won the race. In 2006 and 2007 Gilbert was second in the Wallonnian opener.
Gilbert told sportwereld.be "Actually I only came to train here." The 25 year old Wallonian rider continued by saying:
"After I went so deep on Saturday in the Omloop Het Volk I didn't want to give it all again. I don't do stupid things anymore.
But when it became clear that it would be decided by a mass sprint, it started to itch immediatly. I closed the gap to the
five race leaders and immediatley opened the sprint. I easily won. By the way it was the first mass sprint that I have won.
I won one at the Tour de l'Avenir but that finish was uphill."
Gilbert concluded by saying: "After my victory at Oloop Het Volk the phone was ringing all the time and Tuesday they all
wanted to hear my opinion about the conflict between the UCI and ASO. What do you want me to say about that? Actually we,
askey players, have the key in our hands but there is a lack of solidarity between us. Belgians, French, Spaniards, Italians
name them all, we all ride with diefferent teams and also because of our different nationalities we defend different
interests. Its not easy to get all those riders on one line but we actually have to."
