With Gert Steegmans Quickstep lost an important rider for tomorrows race. Steegmans is suffering from a back injury. But Boonen is confident that he can win the race.
Last Sunday Boonen worked for his teammate Stijn Devolder. Devolder won the Tour of Flanders and it was Boonen who did everything he could to defend Devolders lead. During a press
conference in Kortrijk (Belgium), Boonen said: "I don't have to worry about my form, but you need a bit of luck."
"If Devolder is with us, we have to be able to show something beautiful in the finale. I am good, very good."
"Some of our rivals are already over their peak, and than you can train or rest as much as you want to..."
"I think we have already seen the best of Cancellara. Pozzato was strong on Wednesday, but I can put myself on the same
line."
Boonen looked very relaxed and it didn't seem to bather him that unlike the last couple of years, he did not win one single
race in the Flemish Cycling Week.
"Actually I just do the same as Van Petegem and Museeuw just to do, or like Hoste is doing now."
"Its not a big deal if you don't win a race. You have to take care that you have the right form to win, that's it.," Boonen
said.
Boonen continued by saying: "I can't go on my knees before the start and beg the peloton if they can let me win
because I trained so hard and lived for it."
The others are there to beat me and that makes the races so beautiful."
Just like Leif Hoste said on Thursday, Boonen said he will also keep an eye on Magnus Backstedt. Boonen said he knows "Maggie"
is working for a long time now to win Paris - Roubaix and is one of the riders who knows how to win the "Hell of the North."
