According to Belgian daily newspaper 'Le Soir' Gilbert decided not to start at this years Olympic Games in Beijing (China).
The Belgian rider explained that the course isn't exactly made for him.
"I will not accept my selection for the Olympic Games in Beijing. It wasn't an easy decision. I thought a long time about
it and spoke with national coach Carlo Bomans for half an hour but this is the desicion I took," Gilbert told 'Le Soir'..
"If
you can choose, like me, then Bomans rather prefers a medal, or even a title, in Varese then paricipation in Beijing. Because
there its only about taking part. The course is very selective, a climb of 10 kilometres is nothing for me. We have other
riders for such a course, like for example Jürgen Van Den Broeck, who you can see riding the Giro on tv at the moment,
he will feel good there."
Gilbert will focus on other races: "This decision makes it possible for me to go to the Tour with ambition, regenerate
in August, and than take part in the Vuelta so that I can appear at the start in Varese in a good
condition."
