03.06.2008/Riccardo Riccò finished second overall at this years Giro d'Italia. Despite Riccò's disappointment for failing to win the Giro, Riccò´s performance at the first Grand Tour of the current season was a big success for the 24-year-old rider in his third season as a pro. Moreover, Riccò scored two stage wins in the 'Corsa Rosa' (in Agrigento and Tivoli) and won the white jersey for his lead in the young rider classification. The final podium of the Giro was filled out by third placed Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre).

For once, Riccardo Riccò tries to be diplomatic. Riccò is feeling good, despite having to swallow a second place overall at the Giro d'Italia which ended Sunday. Riccò was 1:57 behind overall champ Alberto Contador. "I don’t like losing, but I’m happy with the Giro I rode. With Piepoli and with better luck, things could have gone differently in this race, even better than in the Tour, seeing that the best racers in the world were here. But I’ll try again. As for the rest, I’m a climber; I’ll return to climb up that last damned step,“ Riccò said.

Riccò continued by saying:"I'd like to thank my team for their help throughout the Giro, all the assistants, all the riders and, above all, my coach, Pietro Algeri. He´s an experienced man and he can always stay cool. Me, with my winner attitude, I can sometimes be quite problematic. This is who I am, I hope I can get tempered with time. Luck didn´t help me much in this edition of the Giro, but I know next year, with one more season upon my shoulders, I´ll be close to unbeatable. I´m exhausted right now, both physically and emotionally. I´m going to Sardinia for a two-week holiday, and then I´ll start thinking of my goals for the second part of this season: the World Championships and the Giro di Lombardia."
