Todays 197 kilometres long second stage of the Tour of Luxembourg started in Schifflange and ended in Differdange
with a mass sprint of a 43 men strong leading group. Credit Agricole's Lithuanian Ignatas Konovalovas grabbed his first win
as a pro, Sergey Lagutin (Cycle Collstrop) came in second. Konovalovas teammate Cyril Lemoine came in third.
The race was coloured by a long break. David Deroo (Skil - Shimano), Michal Polas (Cycle Collstrop), Gregory
Habeaux (Mitsubishi) and Hakan Nilsson (CC Differdange) took off after 30 kilometres. With 25 kilometres to go the four escapees
were caught and although there were several attempts to break away after the four men were caught, the bunch stayed together.
With eight kilometres to go CSC's Fränk Schleck took off, Sergey Lagutin joined Schleck but the chasing bunch,
which was split up in several groups, caught the two riders in the final kilometre.
Neo pro Ignatas Konovalovas won the stage and Swiss CSC rider Fabian Cancellara defended his overall lead.
"Fränk knew he was in great shape and he's ready for the two more hilly stages tomorrow and the day after. We
had things under control today so Fabian kept his lead without any problems. Kurt-Asle Arvesen crashed during the stage and
was quite beat up, but he managed to get through and we think he'll be able to carry on tomorrow," said Team CSC sports director
Kim Andersen after the stage.
