Raboank's Oscar Freire won the bunch sprint of the first stage of the Tour de Suisse today. The opening stage of the Swiss stage race started and finished in Langnau and had a length of 146 kilometres. Freire outsprinted Martin Elmiger (AG2R) and Kim Kirchen (High Road).

The stage was marked by a three-rider strong breakaway. David Loosli (Lampre), Steve Zampieri (Cofidis) and Inigo Landaluze (Euskaltel) had a maximum lead of 8 minutes on the bunch. The trio's 120 kilometres long escape ended only a few hundred meters before the line. The well-organized peloton, under the lead of the Dutch Rabobank team, started the chase about 40 kilometres to go and after the escapees were caught Oscar Freire won the bunch sprint. Freire is also Vhe first overall leader of the race.

Oscar Freire easily won the bunch sprint. The Spaniard had announced yesterday already that everything would work out if there was a sprint. "But Oscar did not know if he was good enough uphill," said a happy Rabobank sports director Frans Maassen shortly after the stage.

The three time UCI Road World Champion worried about the Chuderhüsi, a not-too-long climb with an especially treacherous ending, but Freire's sorrows were unjustified. In fact, the Rabobank rider was the only top sprinter who survived. When the descent was over, Dmitriy Kozontchuk, Bram Tankink, and Laurens Ten Dam were put to work to catch up with the three escapees. Not a simple task, because the threesome had a lead of more than a minute, with only ten kilometers to go.

"But they did a superb job. I am very glad with Dmitriy's performance, because he had not been very good earlier this year. It all worked out, barely. Because Kozontchuk, Tankink, and Ten Dam had to work that hard, Oscar had to do the sprint by himself. But you can trust him with that." Freire accelerated on about two hundred meters from the finish, jumping out of Greg van Avermaet's wheel. No one threatened him on his way to victory.

Maassen: "We did not want to have a bunch sprint at all costs; we wanted to see what the others would do. It was obviously a getaway attempt with good riders and the response came late. We just had to wait and see how it would go on the Chuderhüsi, whether the favourites would spring into action. When that went well it was clear: work. Oscar has shown once again that that is rewarding work."

The Tour de Suisse will continue with the 197 kilometres long second stage from Langnau to the first uphill finish at the Flumserberg. The overall favourites will start their battle for the overall win. Before the final climb of the Flumserberg, the riders will have to climb two third category mountains.
