Picture Gallery Tour de Suisse 2008: Stage 3, June 16, 2008
The 155 kilometres long third
stage started in Flums but before a mass sprint decided the race in Gossau, the riders had to climb 3 third and fourth category
mountains on a rainy day in Switzerland. 157 riders started the race, Astana’s Sergey Yakovlev did not start today’s
third stage.
After the official start
René Weissinger of the Austrian Volksbank team and Hervé Duclos-Lassalle (Cofidis) took off. Team BMC’s Jeff Louder
started a counter attack after 10 kilometres and managed to bridge-up to the two race leaders.
The trio worked together
very well in the pouring rain. After 20 kilometres the escapees passed the top of the Kerenzerberg. Duclos-Lassalle was the
first rider who crossed the line and took 5 points for the mountain classification. Weisinger took 3 points and Louder became
two points. At the top of the Girenbad (after 96 kilometres) the breakaway group crossed the line for the mountain classification
in the same order.
Weisinger won both intermediate
sprints during his escape and took over the lead in the sprint classification.
After 55 kilometres the leading
trio had a maximum lead of 7:30 and from there on their lead started to drop. With 50 kilometres to go the sprinter teams
did a joined effort to catch the escapees. With 25 kilometres to go the lead of the breakaway group was down to one minute.
About 10 kilometres before the line the escapees were caught by the chasing bunch.
With 5 kilometres to go the
riders had to climb the Andwill (4th category) but the climb was no problem for the sprinters. David Loosli (Lampre) was the
first rider who crossed the line for the mountain classification and became 3 points, the Swiss rider was followed by two
Quisrep riders: Giovanni Visconti (2 points) and Gert Steegamns (1 point).
The sprinter teams now controlled the race and were riding full gas, some riders had to let
go the peloton. The Milram train was moving fast to the line but it was Silence- Lotto’s Robbie McEwen who won the stage,
his second seasonal win after the Australian rider earlier won the third stage of this years Tour de Romandie. The winner
of the first stage of the Swiss stage race, Oscar Freire (Rabobank), came in second. Team Columbia’s Gerald Ciolek finished third.
The Tour de Suisse will continue tomorrow with the 171 kilometres long fourth stage from Gossau to Domat-Ems. The riders
will face a mainly flat stage with only 2 third category climbs. The last climb is more then 30 kilometres before the finishline.
