Filippo Simeoni (Flaminia-Bossini) won Sunday's Italian National Championships in Bergamo. The 36 year old veteran won the 254 kilometres long race in 6:19:15. Defending champ Giovanni Visconti tried to catch Simeoni but came to late. Filippo Pozzato (Liquigas) came in third.

Simeoni attacked with four kilometres to go and saved his small lead on the line. It was Simeoni's biggest career win. The winner of two stages at the Vuelta a Espana started his career in 1996 with the legendary Carrera team.

"I dreamed of this moment since I was nine years old. This victory compensates all the suffering, " a happy Simeoni said.

Until today Simeoni was known by most cycling fans as the rider who was chased down by 7 times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong during  stage 18 of the 2005 Tour de France. Although Simeoni was no thread for the overall Armstrong chased him down after Simeoni testified against Italian doctor Michele Ferrari in a doping case. Ferrari was Armstrong's doctor at that time. Later Simeoni sued Armstrong.
