Before this year, the German Gerolsteiner team had won just one stage of the Tour de France. Although there
is still no sponsor for the 2009 season, the manager of the squad Hans-Michael Holczer explained that there is every reason
to be proud of what was accomplished in these past three weeks.
Hans-Michael Holczer said: "We should have a new sponsor now but the situation remains unchanged. We have some talks
and maybe we’ll have a decision soon but at the moment things don’t look too good for the future of the team."
Holczer continued: "I would never have expected to see Bernhard [Kohl] finish the Tour as the third best rider. I was calculating
that he’d probably end in fifth or sixth place but I never believed that he would be fourth… so third place is
a huge surprise for me. At the same time I never considered that Stefan Schumacher could win this time trial."
Holczer added: "After the last four days, when he’s been so undiplomatic: he was just attacking, attacking and attacking.
Everybody was saying that he would definitely not be able to be in the first five in the time trial. He never monitors his
power he just went for it. He goes fast and that’s all he thinks about."
Gerolsteiners team manager could not communicate with Schumacher yesterday: "The radio didn’t work but we saw that
the first check was very good and we knew he had some potential. In the middle he was losing a little bit of force which is
something I think he did on purpose and in the end he accelerated to the maximum and that’s how he won."
Austrian rider Bernhard Kohl couldn't walk after yesterdays stage: "Bernhard is in a terrible state after the stage today.
We’re looking for a doctor because we’re a little bit concerned at the moment. He was at the point where he is
really at the maximum degree of exhaustion."
He was a surprise winner of the first time trial and Stefan Schumacher proved it was no fluke by winning again
on the eve of the final stage of the 2008 Tour de France. It’s another coup for the Gerolsteiner team that is still
without a sponsor for next season but at least they can celebrate two stage wins, as well as the King of the Mountains crown
and third place overall for Bernhard Kohl.
Schumacher said: "In the final, after such a long time trial, you find yourself being cross-eyed from the effort. I didn’t
know anything about my time when I hit the finish line so I had to ask, ‘Which place?’ And I heard first and as
I’d already beaten the time of [Fabian] Cancellara I knew I had a good chance to win."
Yesterdays stage winner continued: "I never even thought I was going to win. It wasn’t even in my mind. I only tried
to find my rhythm and give it 100 percent. After 25 kilometers my radio was no longer working – I don’t know what
happened, perhaps I hit the wrong button but I didn’t hear anything – but I had the time at the second check and
I still wasn’t sure if it was enough to win the stage."
Schumacher explained why he saved some energy for the final
part of the time trial: "I was sure that the last climb on the course would decide the winner. And I was feeling heavy after
45 kilometers and to arrive at the last climb which is more than one kilometer long like that was hard but I had the power
to go over the top. In the last 10 kilometers I had a good ride and that was very important for me."
Schumacher was sharing his hotel room with Bernhrad Kohl during the Tour: "I don’t think anybody outside of the team
thought that we could do a Tour like this so it’s unreal. I’ve been talking a lot with Bernhard [Kohl, editor]
and we’re always saying, ‘Hey, this isn’t just any bike race. It’s the Tour!’ And I cannot believe
what we’ve done. He said that he’d be happy with fifth and now he’s third and the King of the Mountains…
so it’s been an incredible adventure."
With a great result in Saturdays time trial in Tour de France Carlos Sastre narrowed in on fullfilling his biggest dream
as a cyclist.
"When I started today I wanted to do a good time trial, but the deciding factors going into todays stage
were my mind, my team and my form," said "Carlito" after the race and carried on:
"I suffered a lot in this time trial
because it was essential that I rode to my limit. Only in the last five kilometers I was careful and rode a little bit slower
than my maximum. In the end, I am grateful, because I got closer to living my dream of standing on top of the podium tomorow
in Paris. It was very difficult to retain the jersey, but still I managed to do it," said the popular Spaniard.
The
pressure going into the penultimate stage did not weigh too heavily on Sastre's shoulders.
"I was calm last night.
Not feeling to anxious. I slept well and for many hours. It was the chance of my life, both for me, the team and my family
who are here with me. Now I want to spend some time with my wife and kids, as I missed them. It is a dream come true and I
want to share it with them. And the same goes for my team. It was impossible to do this without them. It is extremely motivating
to know that all the riders were ready to help me whenever it was needed."
This is the second year Carlos Sastre went
into the season knowing he was the leader of CSC - Saxo Bank going for victory in the Tour de France. And after the great
performance in 2007 he learned a lot about how to build up for the Tour this year.
"I have prepared better than ever
for this race. I arrived at the Tour in the best shape of my career and what has happened is really a dream for every bike
rider in the world. I felt better and better as the race went on. I recovered well from each stage and the team sacrificed
itself for me. The Schleck brothers sacrificed their own chances."
Team owner Bjarne Riis couldn't be surprised to
see Sastre get better and better as the race went on. He has done that in virtually al the Grand Tours he participated in.
"It
is well known that Carlos goes better in the third week. He may not do as much as others the rest of the year, but he was
on track for this the whole time. He showed that he was the strongest in the mountains and he the team wore down the opposition,"
said Bjarne Riis.
"I really don't know what to say. This is what we've worked so hard to achieve for such a long time and now Carlos and
the team have don it!" Bjarne Riis added.
"We had Fabian Cancellara's intermediate times all the way through and we got times on Evans regularly as well so that
Carlos had something to go by and luckily he had the strength to set a fast pace and keep it all the way and it's an absolutely
incredible feeling for all of us right now," continued Riis whilst surrounded by cheering sports directors, mechanics, soigneurs
and riders near the finish line.
