MacGregor relied on his sprint to capture his first state title Saturday
in Salida, Colo. On a brutally tough 87-mile (140 km) course, the Golden, Colo., resident was the strongest of a select group
of eight riders up the final climb, beating long-time former (TIAA-CREF and Slipstream Sports) teammate Blake Caldwell of
Team Garmin-Chipotle presented by H30 and Brad White (Successfulliving.com presented by ParkPre).
"I have really good form and it’s getting better all the time,"
MacGregor said. "I haven’t been training too hard, just doing local races and waiting for the team to do some big races."
In Milwaukee, Anthony was setting up for the field sprint Saturday night on
the final lap of The Great Downer Avenue Bike Race when a rider went down in front of him. The collision broke the scaphoid
bone in his right wrist, and left him with severe road rash on his right side.
"I flipped over the handlebars and was also hit by a few riders from behind
while I was lying on the ground," Anthony said. "It was certainly the worst crash I have ever been involved in."
Already this season, three other riders from Team Type 1 have suffered broken
bones in their hand or wrist: Matt Wilson, Daniel Holt and Shawn Milne.
Anthony’s injury only adds to the frustration the 23-year-old has been
feeling after an Achilles heel injury sidelined him for the first half of the year.
"I'm learning to exercise a lot of patience, which has always been a tough thing
for me," he said. "I know that everything happens for a reason and I'm just going to try to make the most out of this situation."
Anthony’s latest injury is expected to keep him out of action for at least
six to eight weeks.
MacGregor’s accomplishment took some sting out of a runner-up finish he
had to Kevin Nicol (Toyko Joe's Pro Cycling) in the 43rd Annual Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hillclimb on July 19.
In a race that gains nearly 7,000 feet of elevation in only 27 miles, MacGregor
and Nicol were surprised by a finish line was situated on a blind switchback and not clearly marked with a line, banner or
flag.
"At least in this race, it was six or seven laps of a circuit so it was a finish
you got to know well,” MacGregor said. “It was definitely nice to be able to sprint this time."
