Eric Baumann (Team Sparkasse) sprinted to victory in heavy rain in the 11th edition of the Sparkassen-Giro in Bochum,
Germany. It was the first time that the local team managed to win the race.
The bunch caught a breakaway group which included Christian Kux (Milram), Linus Gerdemann and Tony Martin (both
Columbia) five kilometers before the finish line, Knees attacked on the final straightaway, only to be passed shortly
before the finish line by stage winner Erik Baumann (Team Sparkasse). Third after 180 km was local rider Marcel Sieberg
(Columbia).
"I knew that I had the best tires for the rain and so I attacked about 250 meters before the finish," Milram's
Christian Knees said. "After the last climb I was without teammates in the lead group. Team Columbia had a lot of riders,
so I had to try something. Eric Baumann is a classic sprinter, so an attack was my only chance. Too bad that it was so close
at the end."
An eight-man strong breakaway group dominated the German one-day race, getting away shortly after
the start. The group, which included Milram's Christian Kux, had a lead of up to four minutes. He, along with Team Columbia's
Linus Gerdemann and Tony Martin, kept the pace high, and helped to gradually diminish the size of the group. Three rounds
before the end, those three riders attacked out of the group. The three were able to stay away, with a lead of about two minutes.
In the last of a total of 15 rounds, the escapees were finally caught. On the last climb of the day, Milram's Christian Knees
and Columbia's Servais Knaven attacked, which opened the finale in the rain in Bochum. Knaven crashed in the final curve
and with only 50 meters to go the Dutch rider crashed again.
The Sparkassen-Giro is one of the biggest one-day races
in Germany and annually attracts large crowds to downtown Bochum. The pros had to ride a 15 km course 12 times, for a total
distance of 180 kms.
