05.08.2008/Cadel Evans has been given the all clear to travel to Beijing for the Olympic Games after successful treatment of the injury to his right knee. Evans injured his knee when he slipped on a wet floor on Sunday night at his team's official dinner to celebrate the end of the Tour de France in which he finished second overall.

He initially didn't think any damage had been done but on the flight home from Paris to Switzerland his knee swelled and there was doubt as to whether he would be able to compete in China.

"Cadel has been receiving treatment on his knee since last Tuesday and yesterday (Sunday) he went training on the road with the team for five hours," said Cycling Australia's National Performance Director, Shayne Bannan. "The training went well and this morning we did some final checks and it all looks good so he'll be boarding the plane with the rest of the road team."

Today the men's team is on a six hour training ride ahead of their departure tomorrow and will arrive in Beijing on Wednesday. The men's road race is scheduled for Saturday and a decision will be made after the road race as to whether Evans will join Michael Rogers for Wednesday's road time trial.

"The team would like to make special mention of Adam Hansen who came into the camp last week on standby in case Cadel's knee didn't respond to treatment," said Bannan. "It's a pretty tough situation for anyone but Adam has handled it well and we're grateful he was able to put his post Tour de France holiday plans on hold for us and come in to support the team."

Hansen will fly back to his European home in Frydlant in the Czech Republic to begin his holiday but says he was happy to help out.

"It's a great honour to be the first reserve for the team and I'm happy I could do my bit for the Australian effort," said Hansen. "in the end I wasn't needed but that's good news because it means Cadel is ready to race."
