A break with Cheula, Bosisio and Rizzi was able to reach the
finish line with a securing lead over the peloton, and Barloworld's Gianpaolo Cheula, with an impressive action, achieved
a clear victory starting his sprint with 300 meters to go. LPR's Gabriele Bosisio came in second, while Bruno Rizzi
(NGC Medical -OTC Indus.Porte)completed the podium. The route provided 10 laps of a 16.5 km circuit, with a further last lap
of 15 km, for a demanding and hilly race over 180 km.
"He [Cheula, editor] came out of the Tour de France with a very
good shape - stated a satisfied Barloworld sports director Alberto Volpi - and today he showed it to everyone. The whole
team Barloworld was perfect, as it was yesterday, but Cheula today looked unbeatable! I'm so happy with him because he is
such a nice guy: he is a hard-working guy and an extraordinary team-mate. He's always helpful and reliable from January to
October. He really deserved this victory."
CSC - Saxo Bank's Jürgen Van Goolen took a nice fourth place after
he chased the escapees on his own and managed to join them.
After a lengthy period with accidents and injuries it now looks as
if the Belgian all-round rider is on the right track towards a great autumn.
”We took it a bit easy yesterday
in order to save our strength for today's [saturday, editor] race, which is also very important to one of our sponsors, Nobili.
We had guys all the way up front during most of the race but unfortunately Van Goolen only just made it to the front group
as they hit the finishing stretch. He single-handedly closed a gap of 40 seconds to reach them so you gotta say that he appears
to be ready after a difficult period. In the group behind we had Anders Lund, Lasse Böchmann and Volodymir Gustov so it was
definitely a good day for us in Italy,” said CSC - Saxo Bank sports director Kim Andersen.
