The victory of the Italian Lombard Triptych's first race went to neo-pro Francesco Ginanni of Diquigiovanni Androni, who
outsprinted Leonardo Bertagnolli (Liquigas) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre).
Team Barloworld started with a strong Stephen Cummings, who performed a truly impressive acceleration at the beginning
of the last climb. As a consequence of his effort, a small group of 12 riders remained ahead of the race to play their cards.
With only 2 kilometres to go, Liquigas rider Bertagnolli attacked while none of the other riders was able to follow the
Italian rider. When the race seemed to have gone to Bertagnolli, it was Barloworlds Austrian road champion, Christian
Pfannberger, to start a very long sprint in the last 300 meters in order to reach the victory. Unfortunately he was overpassed
in the last few metres, but he proved to ride with a strong condition.
"Christian showed his strength today too," said Barloworlds
sports director Alberto Volpi, "but he was a little bit unlucky. Anyway, the whole Team Barloworld was good: Cummings
made a strong acceleration, and the other riders were very helpful for the team. I'm also happy with Paolo Longo Borghini
, who returned to races today after his Tour de France's accident and withdrawal."
