Barloworld's Stephen Cummings was smart in taking part in the first breakaway attempt of the day, only 20 km after the start.
The escapees' trio formed by Celli (LPR), Borisov (Amore e Vita) and Cummings himself reached up to a 12' advantage, a gap
that turned out to be unrecoverable by the peloton.
"They cooperated perfectly," said Barloworld sports director Alberto
Volpi post race, and this was the reason why the trio stayed clear throughout the 5 laps of the final circuit (5,6 km)
around Legnano, despite the chasing job by several teams. In the final kilometer, Celli tried his luck with an attack, immediately followed
by an attack by Borisov, but Cummings did not let his fellow escapees get awayand strongly outsprinted his breakaway
companions. The bunch, led by Ballan, came in 3 minutes late.
"Personally, I must admit this win was a little unexpected",
continued Alberto Volpi, "but that's cycling sometimes: a breakaway win today was truly surprising. Nevertheless, Cummings
was not a surprise at all: he rode well on Wednesday, despite not finishing the race, and the British rider also attacked
in the finale at Tre Valli. He had another chance to show what he is worth, and everyone can see the answer."
