21.09.2006/Team CSC had a great day as the best professional time trial riders challenged each other at the world championship. Fabian Cancellara beat his American team mate David Zabriskie, while Brian Vandborg was narrowly edged out of the medal ranks by Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana/Kazakhstan) by a margin of just three seconds.

"I feel like I'm in heaven. It's been a fantastic season, and this morning I had the same feeling as the morning ahead of Paris-Roubaix in the spring. It's so great to win after having prepared so long for this as I have," said a happy Cancellara.

"It was a super day for us. Fabian probably did the time trial of his life, so no doubt he's the right World Champion. I know it's been a huge goal for him and it was beautiful to watch his dream come through. Dave was also exceptionally strong and once again he showed his unique talent. I'm very proud to have two riders on the podium, but I also have to say I was deeply impressed with Brian Vandborg's efforts today. He almost made the podium, which would've been sensational. He has every reason to be very proud," said an emotional Bjarne Riis following the time trial.
