It was the 22 year old Gerolsteiner rider's first professional win. Westphal outsprinted Belarus national road
champion Yauheni Hutarovich (Francaise des Jeux) and Slovenian national road champion Borut Bozic (Cycle Collstrop).
Overall leader Andre Greipel (Columbia) finished fourth, enough to defend his overall lead. The Quick Step team had
tried to dominate the sprint despite Tom Boonen quitting the race after his second stage win on Sunday but the Belgian sprint
train was too fast too early and Gert Steegmans only finished sixth.
Stage winner Carlo Westphal said post race: "I am surprised myself as well that I won the sprint." The 22 year old continued:
"I certainly did not expect this and didn't really realise it when I succeeded. I was so suprised that I didn't even celebrate
on the line."
"Its only my first professional win, but a very beautiful one," Westphal said. Gerolsteiner will leave cycling at the end
of the current season. "If I know something about my future? I don't have contact with other teams yet," Westphal concluded.
