The 18 years old Marianne Vos from the Netherlands won the womens race, defending world champion Hanka Kupfernagel was second. Kupfernagel was beaten in the sprint and cried some tears. She had to fight against a solid team tactick of the Dutch squad. The riders of the Dutch team attacked again and again and Kupfernagel had to answer all these attacks by herself since she was alone. Some attacks wher made by Marianne Vos, others by Daphny Van Den brand. Van Den Brand was rewarded with a third place. At the end Kupfernagel didn`t had enough power anymore to win the sprint against Vos.

In a dramatic action-filled race Erwin Vervecken won his second world championship after 2001. During the last round defending champion Sven Nys fell on his hip and was out of the race. Even without Nys, the Belgium team succeeded to occupy the first two places of this years world championships.  The Belgium squad tried to control the race from the beginning but they had to counter various attacks from the French- and the Czech squads.

The Belgium riders Sven Nys, Bart Wellens and Erwin Vervecken startet the final attack, only the French rider Francis Mourey could follow. The fall of Sven Nys decided about the places on the podium. Vervecken attacked and his Fidea team made Bart Wellens didn`t move his legs anymore. He saved enough energie to win the sprint for the silver medal against Mourey.

The Dutch squad was dissapointing. Richard Groenendaal didn't play a role from the beginning and Gerben de Knegt starte with a back injury, he took the eight place after he had fallen as well.
