Isaac Galvez died on Sunday in Belgium after colliding
with Dimitri De Fauw and railings during the Six Days in Gent.
"His injuries were so serious he died on the way to the hospital," race promoter
Rob Discart told Belgian Sporza radio.
Discart immediatly stopped the race and decided that it would not be continued
on Sunday. The final day of the Gent Sixdays has now been cancelled "out of respect of Galvez, his family and the
other riders" Discart added.
Sixdays legend and race director in Gent, Patric Sercu said:"It was a crash
like many others occure during every race: two riders who touched each other a bit, but this time it happened with
a fatal ending. He crashed against the railing on the outside of the track and died due to internal bleedings. Galvez was
a good rider and as a person he was a quiet and calm guy."
Eddy Merckx who had a dangerous crash during a track race in 1969 as his pacemaker
died, said: "I had a little chat with Galvez on Wednesday morning. When than you hear in the morning that the guy died it
hits you hard. Fate has hit brutally and suddenly. A rider can crash ten times without getting hurt."
"It's a tragedy that the sport seems to be suffering so much bad news," said
Fulgencio Sanchez, the president of the Spanish Cycling Federation.
Sanchez continued by saying: "When he won gold with Llaneras in Bordeaux we
were all celebrating together. This is terribly bad news."
Isaac Galves was born on May 20, 1975 in Vilonava i la Geltru, a city
near Barcelona. The Catalan rider became professional in the year 2000 and was signed by the Kelme squad. Galvez

spot on the fourth stage of the Tour de France.
Together with his partner Juan Llaneras Rossello, Isaac Galvez won the
2006 Madison world championships. It was the second time the pair became world champion after winning the title in 1999
(as Galvez wasn't even a pro). In 2000 and 2001 Galvez and Llaneras won the silver medal in the madison discipline at the
world championships. A few weeks ago Galvez became second at the Sixdays of Amsterdam and before yesterdays fatal crash Galvez
