Looking back in anger
A Day in the Life of a Soigneur
New: Ullrich with Klöden and Kessler at Mallorca
Reynes won Trofeo Cala Millor
While the rumour mill inside the peloton spread the news that Jan Ullrich is training at Mallorca,
a rumour which we can't confirm at the moment, Vicente Reynes (Caisse d'Epargne) won the second stage of the Vuelta Mallorca.
It was a happy day for the Caisse d'Epargne squad as José Joaquin Rojas made it a double victory
for the squad.
The stage between Cala Millor and Cala Bona was dominated by a breakaway group of three riders, which
started an early break on the hilly territory. The young Rabobank pro Kai Reus, Ivan Mayoz (Euskatel) and Jesús Tendero (Vina
Magna Corpu) attacked after 20 kilometers. At first the bunch did not react. The lead of the breakaway group grew
up to 15:34 minutes after 51 kilometers.
After 100 kilometers Jesús Tendero wasn't able to stay in the breakaway group, and on the last 30 kilometers,
Kai Reus even was on top alone after he shook off Ivan Mayoz. However, two kilometers ahead of the finish, Kai Reus was
caught up with as well. The peloton, in which Team Saunier Duval did a lot of the chasing work, parted into two groups due
to the high speed and the strong wind. Finally, Vicente Reynes won before José Joaquin Rojas and Tomas Vaitkus. These three
riders lead the general classification classification as well.
Results second stage:
1. Vicente Reynes – Caisse d’Epargne 3:52:28 2. José Joaquin Rojas – Caisse d’Epargne 3.
Tomas Vaitkus – Discovery Channel 4. Marcel Sieberg – Team MILRAM 5. Wouter Weylandt – Quick Step-Innergetic
Leukemans and Devenyns operated
Björn Leukemans and Dries Devenyns
were operated yesterday at Herentals hospital (Belgium). Leukemans broke a collarbone, and Devenyns fractured
the radius of his forearm. Both Predictor-Lotto riders crashed during the Etoile de Besseges. Leukemans told Belgium daily
sports sportwereld.be: "Well it's a habbit like every other habbit." Leukemans continued by saying: "I crashed with 70 kilometers
per hour. While I was flying through the air I heard through my earphone there was a crash."

Astarloa with debut for Milram
Team Milram starts at the Tour Méditerranéen (UCI 2.1, FRA) from
14 to 18 February 2007 with an array of eight riders. The tour in the south of France is the start of the season for Igor
Astarloa and Mirko Celestino, who will lead the young team.
Last year, Elia Rigotto was able to win the fifth stage
of the Tour Méditerranéen. A similar success is aspired this year. The Tour Méditerraneen starts on Wednesday with a team
time trial over 26.2 kilometers in Gruissan. The tour continues through the south of France and ends in Sanremo after six
stages.
Igor Astarloa starts restrained in the new season. "I don't think I will have good chances at the Tour Méditerranéen.
It is still early in this season and I know that there are riders who are trained better than me. Therefore I hope I will
be able to finish the race in a good condition and to do well at the next race, the Trofeo Laigueglia in Italy. My goals for
the season are the spring classics", said the Spainard, whose highlights will follow. Astarloa joined Milram this winter,
the former road world champion came over from Barloworld.
But Mirko Celestino has more expectations: "I will start
at the Tour Méditerranéen with some ambition. I feel very well and I hope to be lucky and to have the best possible start
into this season."

Toyota United with a strong team in their second season
The Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team starts its official second season with a line up featuring ten returning
squad members and new names including: former professional Australian National Road Champion Henk Vogels; two-time professional
Irish National Road Champion and former Junior World Road Champion Mark Scanlon; stage racing expert Burke Swindlehurst and
the formidable Caleb Manion.
Now headed by former U.S. National Road Champion Chris Wherry and lead out specialist Vogels, the team to
watch in 2007 is well-poised for a repeat of its dynamic inaugural season. Identified from day one as the most
dangerous team in the peloton after surprise wins in Stage One and Stage Four of the Amgen Tour of California, the Toyota-United
Pro Cycling Team earned the respect of its competitors in the field, ending season one with 55 first-place victories, podium
placements in 94% of all races entered, plus 24 NRC wins to take the number two position on the NRC Team Rankings.
Returning to the team are former U.S. National Time Trial Champion Chris Baldwin (USA), who comes off a storied
2006 season; former Florida State Criterium Champion Stefano Barberi (BRA); two-time New Zealand National Road and Time Trial
Champion Heath Blackgrove (NZL); Pan Am Games Champion Ivan Dominguez (CUB); top mountain climber Justin England (USA); two-time
Mexican National Champion Jose Manuel Garcia (MEX); Multi-National, Multi-NCCA National Champion Bobby Lea (USA); 2005 &
2006 Serbian National Champion Ivan Stevic (SCG); multi-European stage winner Sean Sullivan (AUS), and former USPRO Road Champion
Chris Wherry (USA).
"We're in an extraordinary position," said Team Owner Sean Tucker. "I'm
excited about the season ahead. Based on our team's performance last year we received interest from cyclists around
the world. We were able to select four new members who best complemented our team and who bring a wealth of experience to
the domestic scene. In addition, by aligning with Fuji Bicycles and Bontrager, we've improved our road bike. Plus, we’ve
increased our offerings to the over 13,000 fan members. We're ready for 2007."
Also on board is Team Director Kirk Willett who joins Harm Jansen (former USPRO Criterium Champion and Dutch
National Champion) to jointly manage the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team. Willett, a former professional cyclist and
well-known team director will handle team logistics, day-to-day operations, race strategy, and overall management of team
personnel. Prior to Toyota-United, Willett worked from 2000 to 2003 as Team Director for the Prime Alliance Cycling Team.
There, he managed high profile athletes, leading the team to over 100 wins and the number one individual position on the NRC
calendar. In 1999, as a leader of the Mercury Professional Cycling Team, Mr. Willett also served as Development Cycling
Team Director/Manager. (Photo by Kathleen Poulos)
"We've got a tight roster, and in Kirk an experienced and tactical
genius," said Harm Jansen. "I think we're well positioned to take on the competition, our team is already riding well.
Baldwin had an electric end of season showdown in the national time trials, and recently, Heath Blackgrove took second at
the National New Zealand Road Championships. We’ve added some serious firepower and Pro Tour level experience
with Mark Scanlon, Henk Vogels and climbing specialist Burke Swindlehurst, plus our wild card Caleb Manion. I
think we'll definitely have an impact on the domestic racing circuit this year.“
The Toyota-United
Pro Cycling Team’s North American racing schedule, will again begin with the Amgen Tour of California in 2007 and will
include the Pro Cycling Tour (the premier professional cycling series in the U.S.), and the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar
(NRC), which features more than 70 races this year.
