Tour of Basque Country: Cobo takes overall!

Juanjo Cobo (Saunier Duval-Prodir) has excellently defended Fridays win at stage 6 of the 47th Vuelta al País Vasco. On Saturday, he clocked the third best time in the 14km individual time-trial with the start and the finish line in Oiartzun. Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) crossed the line with the best time and took the stage, but the "red bird" man from Cantabria knew how to make the best of his battle against the clock: brilliantly showcasing his legs, Cobo finished only 4 seconds after Sánchez, and gained 37 seconds over Ángel Vicioso (Relax-GAM), atop whom he sat yesterday but just 1 second. This smart move secured the Basque Tour for Saunier Duval-Prodir, who did excellent teamwork throughout the week. The yellow festival in the individual classification was highlighted by the team finishing at the top of the leaderboard in the teams classification, with an advantage of more than 10 minutes over Caisse d´Épargne, in the runner-up spot.

"Winning this race is awesome!," exclaimed Cobo when the event was over. "I came here in good shape, thinking I would work for Marchante and Koldo Gil. But I took the lead on day one already and I felt I could make it. Earlier today, everybody was telling me I should take it easy, that I had already done enough. Winning the tour of the Basque Country, however, is quite something -it can be a turning point in a cyclist´s career. I believe I´ve shown I can win any one-week event in the future."

Tour de Georgia: Stage Win Is Toyota-United's Goal
The Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team enters the 2007 Tour de Georgia with its eyes on a stage win.
“Our No. 1 goal is to win a stage,” Toyota-United Team Director Harm Jansen said. “I would say that there is also some room to assist a rider who has a good place on general classification and help keep him up there.”

Toyota-United’s eight-man squad for this year’s seven-stage, seven-day, 658-mile (1,059 km) UCI 2.HC race consists of Chris Baldwin, Ivan Dominguez, Justin England, Caleb Manion, Ivan Stevic, Burke Swindlehurst, Henk Vogels and Chris Wherry.

At last year’s race, Toyota-United was the only domestic squad to capture a stage when sprinter Juan José Haedo won the 118.2-mile (190.2 km) Stage 6 from Cumming/Forsyth County to Alpharetta.

This year, Toyota-United will look to Dominguez and Vogels for stage wins. With seven victories to his credit, Dominguez is third in the National Race Calendar points standings behind Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health Cycling Team) and Rory Sutherland (Health Net presented by Maxxis). Vogels excels on stages with tough finishing circuits and has one victory this season (Central Valley Classic, Stage 3).

Baldwin had the best finish by an American racing on a domestic team in last year’s race, placing ninth overall. England is also projected to do well after finishing 11th overall. He recently finished second on the challenging climb to Oak Glen during Stage 1 of the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

“Justin is riding well and he loves the humidity,” Jansen said. “He’s certainly riding better than he did last year and I think he has yet to become aware of his full potential.”

Toyota-United, which finished fifth in the team standings at the 2006 Tour de Georgia, is the No. 1 team in the NRC standings ahead of Health Net and Priority Health. It was the only domestic team to win a stage of this year’s Amgen Tour of California when Dominguez took Stage 7’s Long Beach Circuit Race.
