Tour
de Suisse: Uran takes takes stage 8, Efimkin defended overall lead
The Columbian Rigoberto Uran (Unibet.com) has won the eighth stage of Tour de Suisse
today. Uran jumped in the final kilometer and left the entire lead group behind him to take a powerful first ProTour win for
the Unibet.com squad. Italian rider Christian Moreni (Cofidis) came in second, Andreas Klöden Astana came in third. Russian
rider Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne) defended the overall lead.
"I attacked at 800 metres from the uphill
finish line", said Uran. "I felt really strong and kept on the pace perfectly. This is a fabulous victory and I'm very satisfied
with it!"
"This is brilliant", said Unibet Sports Director Jacques Hanegraaf. "This victory and our collective team
performance this week, show we deserve our ProTour spot. This is exactly what our team needed."
Early in the stage Sastre was in a break with 10 others, but as some of them were main contenders in the general classification,
they were not allowed too far. Furthermore this was the very last chance for a stage win for many riders, so the chance of
a break lasting all the way home was minimal.
Still Sastre managed to escape from the group just 20 kilometers before
the finish - with him was Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), but he was soon left behind by Sastre in his quest for victory.
But
the peloton sat a furious pace and eight kilometers before the finish Sastre had to face the fact that he was not going to
make it. In stead Unibet ran off with the victory, when young Columbian rider Rigoberto Uran went solo 600 meters before the
line and won with a two-second gap to the peloton, which counted about 50 riders – among them the main contenders for
the overall win.
"Carlos got to test himself, which was nice to see. I think he did well – it definitely looked
promising ahead of the Tour. He was a bit unlucky with the wind, because he had head wind on the part, where he was on his
own. But it was a good day for us, and now we're hoping for a great time trial from Fabian Cancellara and Fränk Schleck tomorrow,"
said Team CSC's sports director Kim Andersen.

Ster Elektrotoer: Cavendish won the final stage, Langeveld overall winner
Many thought he was boasting, but Erik Dekker's prediction that Sébastian Langeveld had a shot at winning
the general ranking of the Ster Elektrotour on Saturday afternoon through in-course sprints came true. In two in-course sprints,
Langeveld won just enough bonus seconds to overtake the leader of the general ranking; the German Paul Martens. Because Mark
Cavendish won the stage and Martens and the other candidates did not win anymore bonus seconds, Langeveld's biggest victory
in his still fresh career was a fact.
A happy 22 year old Mark Cavendish (T-Mobile) said: On Tuesday I came short befroe we started from signing
the UCI riders charter in Geneva. At that time my legs were not to good. But in the following days I found my rhytm." Candish
coninued by saying: "Today I was there again. My team mates prepared the sprint in a fantastic manner. Already 800 meters
before the finish line I took the lead and finished it off."
With it, Langeveld crowns a strong period. He already played a major part in the Tour of Luxemburg and the
Rabo-cyclist was a candidate for the victory until 150 meters from the finish line. His good shape is especially remarkable
since he missed a part of the spring season because of a wrist injury he sustained in March. The advantage of this disadvantage
was that he could keep on training but Langeveld obviously missed a strong dose of competition. He displayed his increased
strength in Luxemburg and the Ster Elektrotour. The victory in the general ranking is the highlight for now.
Rabobank Sports Director Erik Dekker was determined on Friday. "We will do anything we can to win the general ranking,"
he said then. It was clear in the first few kilometers of the concluding stage that he had not been boasting. The Rabo team
took to the head of the pack and cranked up the pace to such heights that nobody could attack. "We had of course figured out
which 'unusual cyclists' would be participating in the in-course sprints. There were not that many so there was a real opportunity,"
explained Dekker. "But you still have to do it of course. It looks very easy but it is not."
And it showed in the first of the two in-course sprints. Stefan van Dijk barely squeaked by Langeveld who, because of that,
only won two bonus seconds and not the three he needed. "We then still needed one second and we had one chance to do it,"
Dekker concluded. But Langeveld seized that tiny opportunity. He came in second, behind Robert Hunter. Two more seconds were
added and he passed Paul Martens with them. The danger was the bonus seconds at the finish. That danger increased when Rabo's
fastest man, Graeme Brown, hit a stake and fell, without any bad consequences, in the last but one turn. But, while Brown
was slowly coming to his senses, nobody was capable of threatening Langeveld.
Mark Cavendish won the stage in Eindhoven and Langeveld won the general ranking. "He really deserves it," thought Dekker.
"He is a great guy on the team, a good colleague, someone with enormous perception, and also a smart cyclist in the race.
He picked things up really well after that fractured wrist. Where Sébastian will end? He has got what it takes to become a
very good cyclist who can do well especially in the classics. In the short run? To me he is one of the top favorites for the
Dutch championships next week."
Kurt-Asle Arvesen and Matti Breschel finished as third and fourth in the Dutch stage race Ster Elektrotoer,
which ended on Saturday with 149-kilometers from Sittard/Geleen to Eindhoven.
"That's fine. Of course we would've liked
a stage win, but things didn't turn out the way we'd hoped. But I definitely think our guys did a great job down here and
played a major part in making this a good race, so I'm fully satisfied," said CSC Sports Director Scott Sunderland after the
race.
