05.07.2007/ Doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, the Spanish doctor who was arrested on May 23, 2006 in connection with Operacion Puerto, spoke to students during a lecture of the summer courses at the King Juan Carlos University.

Eufemiano Fuentes gave the lecture at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Aranjuez (Spain). Fuentes was accompanied with 3 bodyguards. About 40 students and dozens of journalists attended at the lecture. Spains secretary of Sports, Jaime Lissavetzky and chief editor of Spanish daily sports AS, Alfredo Relaņo cancelled their cooperation with the university for the summer lectures because they did not want to have anything to do with Fuentes. The course instructor, Juan Luis Galiacha invectiveley said that Lissavetzky was never invited to the lecture, "a bold lie".

Funetes spoke about 30 minutes and said he is proud of his work, he never caused any harm to anybody. Fuentes added: "Those who used my services never had a gun to their throad or a knife in their back. They all came voluntarily".

Fuentes said that in his opinion there are two kinds of sports: healthy sports, which is good from a medical point of view and professional sports which is unhealthy and leads to health damages. To avoid that is his duty as a doctor.

Fuentes continued by saying: "I would never advice anybody to take performance enhancing drugs. Its illegal" But Fuentes also said that doping eases exhaustion and improved performance. Performance enhancing drugs are taken in many sports disciplines. "In cycling there are more controls."

Spain's anti-doping law came into effect after Fuentes was arrested the court of Madrid filed the Puerto case as Spain's new doping laws could not be applied retroactively, the State prosecution appealed but observers believe that doctor Fuentes will walk. One of the students asked if Fuentes thinks that the new anti-doping law is bad for health because it forbids all kind of substances who he would like to prescribe as  a sports physisian, Fuentes said: "That remains to be seen."

Fuentes continued by saying: "The amount of pressure put on by athletes and sports teams to achieve the desired results means the doctor is seen as obligated to prescribe treatments that [an athlete] might not necessarily want," he said.

Fuentes did not really answer the question if he wants to return as a sports doctor: I am not a clairvoyant. Maybe yes, maybe no."
