Todays third stage went from Pipriac to Cholet over 138 kilometers. The stage started at a rather fast
pace with attacks immediately after kilometre 0. After 12.5 kilometers 21 riders managed to break away: Simon Spilak
(SLO), Guillaume Levarlet (FRA), Andre Steensen, Thomas Kvist, Andreas Frisch (DEN), Sergey Shcherbakov (RUS), Tom Leezer,
Bauke Mollema (NED), Tony Martin (GER), Herberts Pudans (LAT), Kristof Vandewalle (BEL), BenT Instxausti (ESP), Laurent
Beuret, Michael Randin (SUI), Craig Lewis (USA), Christian Meier (CAN), Andriy Suralyov (UKR), Florian Morizot, Yoann Offredo
(FRB), Oscar Sanchez (COL) and Frederik Wilmann (NOR). Their lead grew rapidly. They indeed enjoyed a 2’15 advantage
over the pack at the first intermediate sprint at Guéméné-Penfao, won by Suralyov ahead of Leezer and Kvist, and then 2’50
at Nort-sur-Erdre.
At the intermediate sprint of Ligne the breakaway group’s move carried on being decisive:
Leezer claimed the most points and seconds ahead of Suralyov and Sanchez. Nelson Rocha (POR) and Gatis Smukulis (LAT) who
took off in a counter-attack were 3’55 behind while the bunch remained at 4’10. At the entry of the feeding
zone, both riders were caught back but the gap remained the same.
Meier made it first at the top of the only climb
of the day, the Côte de Champtoceaux (km 86), followed by Shcherbakov and Sanchez. Behind attempts to break away occurred
in vain. The gap however started dropping: 3’40 after 100 kilometers. After 101 kilometers Stéphane Poulhiès (FRA),
the yellow jersey holder attacked and was joined by Dennis Van Winden (NED) and Ignatas Konovalova (LTU), but a
crash changed the situation considerably and the pack awaited the event leader. From then on the gap started growing seriously
. The lead was 4 minutes after 103 kilometers.
At the intermediate sprint in Geste Leezer, Levarlet and Suralyov led the front group as the lead
reached a huge 6’10. In the final twenty kilometers, Mollema and then Morizot gave it a go and attacked, never however
managing a good enough gap on their former breakaway companions. Behind the pack seemed to have stopped its chasing efforts
as the gap reached 6'40" with 10 kilometres to go. Entering the city of Cholet, further attacks occurred in the leading
group. Mollema again tried to take off but was eventually caught. The group remained bunched with 500m to go when Vandewalle
made a winning move claiming stage success ahead of Mollema who took command of the overall standing and also captured the
green jersey. Marco Coledan (ITA) keeps his polka-dot jersey.
