With only 200 metres to go, it seemed as if Jérôme Coppel (FRA), in the lead throughout the 24 kilometers
of the circuit would win his first stage of the Tour de l’Avenir. And actually no-one was really surprised seeing how
comfortable the French time-trial specialist looked. But once again drama hit the race as Coppel went for a slide in the final
moments. Coppel indeed hit the ground in the last bend of the course, seeing all hopes of success fade away. Meanwhile, Adriano
Malori (ITA), who had clocked the best time close to an hour before could start considering stage victory. The Italian
was finally outpaced by late starter Rafaa Chtioui (MIX), who eventually beat his day’s rival by four seconds.
In
the general classification, Tony Martin (GER), fourth in todays stage, claims the lead while Bauke Mollema, fifteenth at 46’’,
drops down to third spot behind Denmark’s’ Andre Steensen.
Rafaa Chtioui said: "I have been dreaming of winning a time trial for years, but I didn’t know how good
I could be compared to the others. Therefore, I only rode as fast as I could, and eventually I won. Actually, I am the first
who is surprised by this victory, but the happiest as well."
