The sixth stage from Contres to Saint-Amand-Montrond with a distance of 143.5 kilometers started rather
slow. The pack took off at a rather cool pace.
David Veilleux (CAN) took advantage of this slow start to break away after 12.5 kilometers. He was eventually
caught back at after 25 kilometers, his maximum lead was 45".
After 32 kilometers, Dario Cataldo (ITA) gave it a go and took off alone. His lead grew gradually. Just before
the first intermediate sprint, Marco Coledan (ITA), Gatis Smukulis (LAT), Martins Trautmanis (LAT) and José Herrada (ESP)
took off on a counter-attack. At the intermediate sprint at Graçay Cataldo grapped the most points with a small
15” lead over Coledan, Trautmanis and Smukulis while the pack remained 1’ behind. The front man was eventually
caught by the chasing group of four after 49 kilometers.
The five leaders increased their advantage and had a 4’30
lead at kilometre 90. At the intermediate sprint of Chateauneuf-sur-Cher, Trautmanis made it first ahead of Smukulis and Cataldo,
with the pack 5’ behind. The chase started from then on under the influence of the German team. After 110 kilometers,
the lead of the escapees dropped down to 3’40’’. The bunch at high speed started breaking up in
several groups.
After 116 kilometers, the leading group entered the final circuit with a 3’ gap on the first
part of the bunch. With 25 kilometers to go, the gap had dropped down to 2’40. At the first passage on the line at Saint-Amand-Montrond,
Smukulis claimed the third and final bonus sprint ahead of Coledan and Cataldo, while the bunch was then only 2’15 adrift.
The escapees then started the climb up the Vieille Côte. Coledan and Trautmanis were rapidly dropped behind. At the
top, Cataldo claimed the most climber’s points ahead of Herrada and Smukulis. Coledan cleared the climb 15’’
behind while the pack remained at 3’15. The three leaders increased their advantage over their former companions, Coledan
and Trautmanis. They made it together until the final three kilometres working perfectly well together. Herrada then managed
a decisive attack with Smukulis and Cataldo failing to respond. The Spaniard enjoyed a decent 40’’ with only a kilometer
to go. He went on to claim stage victory ahead of Cataldo and Smukulis.
No worries however for German Tony Martin
who keeps the yellow jersey on his shoulders. Cataldo on the other hand becomes the new leader of the points’ standings.
