Michael Boogerd crashed during an individual training on Friday. He suffered wounds to his knees and also sustained a back injury. Boogerd was taken to the hospital in Bergen op Zoom by an ambulance. He then underwent treatment and they installed a drain in his knee. It seems like he will be able to have a light practice again on Monday October 15th. Boogerd said after he had received his treatment: "I want to start in Lombardy, no matter what."

After the race in Lombardy Boogerd will ride a farewell race on Sunday October 21 at the Cauberg in Valkenburg (Netherlands). The Cauberg is the traditional finish of the Amstel Gold Race, a race which was won by Boogerd in 1999. During the Six Days of Amsterdam (October 22 - 27), Boogerd will start at the 'Derny Gala'.

Boogerd also started a foundation. The Michael Boogerd Foundation is raising money for the following organisations: KiKa, Right to Play, War Child and Ride for the Roses. Besides various actions like the organistaion of the Ride for the Roses in groningen the foundation also created a t-shirt. On the front side of the t-shirt is a picture of Michael Boogerd and at the back Boogerd's palmares are listed (see picture) .
