The teamwork between Milram's two top sprinters Alessandro Petacchi and Erik Zabel worked out perfectly at
the finish in Tours. Erik Zabel prepared the sprint for Alessandro Petacchi who only had to finalize the sprint on the last
150m. "The race today was quite nervous, the first 150 kilometres we went nearly with an average speed of 50 kilometres per
hour", explained Zabel after the race. "Therefore lots of riders were already tired in the final. Like that we weren't able
to do our train as Alessandro likes it the most. Marco Velo and Alberto Ongarato had to work a lot before. I passed Alessandro
when nearly 600 metres to go and took him along. When 500 metres to go I started the sprint and prepared the final up to 150 meters
before the finish-line. And that's actually the right moment, because 500 meters are to long for a pure sprinter. So at the
end it was perfectly for us and Alessandro finished sovereignly."
For Alessandro Petacchi it has been his19th victory
of the current season and it was valuable in certain ways: "I wanted to end my season with a great victory like this. This
season was quite good but this is the best. In the past days I concentrated very much on that aim. At the race the team worked
a lot and in the final there was only Erik left to help me in the sprint. And he is a sprint-teacher, he brought me at the
right moment in front of the bunch. Like that I was able to do the perfect sprint. When somenone like him supports me winning,
the wins just count double as much. I believe that this race is the best in my career besides Milano-San Remo 2005. There
are not so many classics for sprinters. Accordingly to that it's nice to win one of these races", Petacchi said shortly after
race.
The second last race of the ProTour started right at the beginning very fast. Again and again leading groups
were formed and in the meantime the bunch was split into four parts. Yet after 150 kilometers a group of 30 riders broke away,
from which a little bit later, David Boucher (Landbouwkrediet), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas) and Serge Pauwels (Chocolatde
Jacques) dominated the race. On their way they were able to build up a gap of nearly seven minutes which didn't last to the
final. 34 kilometers before the finish the group got busted for the first time when Quinziato broke away and the belgian Serge
Pauwels dropped behind. Just a couple kilometers further also David Boucher had to let go. Manual Quinziato finally got caught
eight kilometers before the finish. Right after the catch another trio went of again and reached the last two kilometers with
a gap of 22 seconds. 800 meters before the finishline the trio with Filippo Pozzato (Liquigas), Philippe Gilbert (FD Jeux)
and the dutch rider Karsten Kroon (CSC) got finally caught by the bunch.
