The anticipated sprinter's finish was in jeopardy for a while during the final 30 kilometers, when several strong riders
attacked with Quickstep's Tom Boonen's teammate Paolo Bettini at the front.
Earlier Jaén native Manuel Ortega attacked immediatly after the start. The escape of the Andalucía – Cajasur rider’s
ended shortly past the summit of the Alto de San Jerónimo.
Ortega was caught after Bettini had split the peloton with
a brilliant attack on the category-3 climb, but especially Liquigas fought hard to keep everyone together so the World Champ
was caught again. Perhaps the attack would have been an even bigger threat if one or two of the others from the group had
managed to catch up to the Italian rider. Alexandr Kolobnev (CSC - Saxo Bank) did try to reach Bettini, but it was too late
and he had to give in. Also the Cofidis duo David Moncoutié and Sylvain Chavanel had a go but without success.
Boonen took the win today in Córdoba, his first stage win in his fourth participating in the Spanish event. The former
world champion outsprinted Italian rider Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) and German racer Eric Zabel (Milram). The Liquigas
rider is the new overall leader, dethroning Alejandro Valverde by 7 seconds thanks to the time bonuses.
