29.08.2006/ Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso denied using doping substances today during a hearing of the Italian anti-doping authorities. It's the first hearing of an athlete after several riders were suspended by their teams because of allegations that these riders are connected with Spanish doctor Fuentes.

Basso stated after the two hour long hearing before a commission of the Italian Olympic committee: "It's clear that i never engaged in doping".

Basso's lawyer, Massimo Martelli told reporters that the hearing was adjourned untill September 12 when a desicion is expected weather the case will be dismissed or not.

CSC spokesman  Brian Nygaard also attended at the hearing and said: "It's good that a hearing has started and that the case moved on."

Basso told fans outside the building that he expects to return to racing soon.

Ivan Basso's confidence doesn't come as a surprise. Two weeks before the hearing of Basso by the Italian Olympic comittee, the president of the Italian Cycling federation (FCI) Renato Rocco continued to back Basso and questioned the credibility of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.
