Tirreno-Adriatico: Klöden with strong performance

Matteo Bono couldn't believe it, he won the toughest stage of Tirreno-Adriatico (San Benedetto del Tronto-San Giacomo Monti della Laga, 164 km with a mountain top finish): born in Ome (Brescia) in 1983, second year pro with Lampre-Fondital, Bono conquered the glory (and his first pro victory) on a perfect day. In a breakaway of 10 riders which started after the first kilometers, Lampre-Fondital’s rider attacked at 4,5 kilometers before the finishline, just where the climb became tougher; Bono kept on pedaling with grind, leaving behind all his opponents and reached the finish line with a lead of 32” on Gasparotto and 41” on Visconti.
"I still can’t believe I won, but luckily it’s all true and it’s all so beautiful," Bono Commented. "I knew I was in a good shape, but I didn’t imagine that I could be so strong: in the breakaway there were very strong athletes, such as Freire, and I thought that I could obtain a good result. I tried to attack on the climb: I immediately looked for somebody to help me, but I noticed that no one could follow me, so I began to think only to pedal. I would like to dedicate this victory to my family, to all the people that support me in my activity, to Lampre-Fondital’s management that allowed me to become a pro cyclist, to the team sponsors, to Bruno Leali that guided me in amateurs and to Polisportiva Camignone where I began to cycle."

Behind Bono there was a fierce battle for the overall lead. Astana took the iniative when Alexander Vinokourov (Astana) attacked on the final climb. Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), who won Sundays ITT and was wearing the yellow jersey, was cracking and as the group with Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile), Stefan Schumacher and Andreas Klöden (Astana) came back to Vinokourov, Kirchen and Klöden were able to drop Schumacher. New race leader is Andreas Klöden, with Kim Kirchen only 3 seconds behind him.

Kim gave it everything on the final climb, but unfortunately he just lacked a few seconds in the end. But I am delighted with the way the team worked and performed today," said T-Mobile sporting director Valerio Piva.

Klöden said: "Ofcourse I want to keep my lead." 'Klödi' continued by saying: "If it fails, than that's a pitty but Tirreno never was a goal. This stage race is only lying on my road to July. The Tour, the great goal of my campaign." The treatment of his friend Jan Ullrich by his former team (T-Mobile) and the German cycling federation seems not to be forgotten, after a reporter said he was close to give Germany and Astana a nice victory Klöden said: "I don't race for Germany, I race for Astana." Klöden continued with: "And for Kazachstan because we not only have sponsors behind us but a whole nation. It has a lot to do with this team that I am standing here in the leaders jersey. We found each other and the enthousiasm is catching. But most of all: I have had a winter without problems. That is the main explanation for my success."

Last years overall winner Thomas Dekker lost more than 10 minutes yesterday after he had became fever the night before. Dekker won't start on the final stage today, and also won't start at Milano-San Remo. In an sms Dekker wrote: "Yesterday evening fever.. I cleaned my bed twice last night, totally wet from sweating. Not to much moral this morning but I was hoping that I could maintain my position on the final climb. It is a pitty but the power of the last days was not in my legs anymore."

Unibet.com preparing for Milano-San Remo

The Unibet.com ProTour Team is preparing for Milano-SanRemo in Nice. Jacques Hanegraaf assembled his riders in the South of France for a team training and is already looking forward to the Primavera next Saturday. Since Unibet.com could not prepare at Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico the team had an extra training camp. If an Unibet.com rider wins Milano-San Remo it would be the first time since Francesco Moser in 1984, that a rider wins who did not start at Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico. Moser won with only one race in his legs, before La Primavera he road Milano-Torino.

Unibet.com team manager Jaques Hanegraaf is staisfied with the training camp: "Our team is preparing perfectly. The weather is fine and our riders are very motivated", said Hanegraaf.
Marco Zanotti, Matteo Carrara, Matthew Wilson, Jeremy Hunt, Gustav Larsson, Michal Golas, Victor Hugo Pena, Sergey Kolesnikov, Gorik Gardeyn, Laurens ten Dam and Arnaud Coyot are the Unibet.com ProTour riders in Nice. Baden Cooke and Jimmy Casper are joining the team training later this week.

23 teams at Amstel Gold Race

The organisation of the 42nd edition of the Amstel Gold Race has decided to let only 23 cycling teams start in this year's race.

Next to the 20 Pro Teams have Skil-Shimano, Team Wiesenhof-Felt and Chocolade Jacques received a wildcard for the race on 22 april 2007. The organisation has the right to distribute 5 wildcards, but did not use all 5 wildcards because of safety consequences.
"The  Amstel Gold Race" has always been turning and wriggling and besides that has the number of traffic braking obstacles increased dramaticly in the Dutch parts of the race"  says director Leo van Vliet. "Besides the consideration with communities and the Province  to try to minimize the traffic braking obstacles has the organisation also decided to reduce the number of partcipants.  This way we want to show that we do the best we can, to try to make the race safer" says van Vliet.

Milne adds seconds to lead with 2nd in second stage of Tour of Taiwan

Shawn Milne of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis once again found himself in the decisive break of the day along side teammate Frank Pipp. And while he didn't repeat his win in Stage 1, Milne was able to finish second in the 80 km Stage 2 criterium behind Kam Po Wong (Hong Kong Team) and take a time bonus on the finish line to extend his overall lead out to 25 seconds on Australian National Road Champion Darren Lapthorne (Drapac Porsche). After helping to defend Milne's lead, Pipp came to the line 13th at four seconds behind the rest of his break-mates.

The main field rolled in more than 2:30 later, effectively turning the Tour of Taiwan into a 13-rider race for the overall victory. Milne and his teammates will have to be tremendously attentive in their attempts to control the race for the remainder of the week, a difficult task when teams are limited to five riders, and Drapac Porsche has three of theirs in the top 10 overall. They include Lapthorne and big Rob McLachlan, who won multiple stages in this race last year and gave Health Net Presented by Maxxis fits en route to Kirk O'Bee's overall win here in 2006.

The Tour of Taiwan continues Tuesday with a 130 km race around Chiayi.

Toyota United dominates Sequoia

A textbook lead-out to the finish delivered the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team its first-ever 1-2-3 finish Sunday at the Quad Knopf Sequoia Cycling Classic Criterium.

Ivan Dominguez took the win – his fifth of the season – while teammates Ivan Stevic and Henk Vogels crossed the finish line in second and third, respectively, at the end of the 40-mile (64.4 km) race in Visalia, Calif.

“You can pretty much say domination was the word of the day,” Vogels said.

Dominguez said the victory was even more memorable because of his teammates’ finishes.

“It was nice to see Stevic and Henk get second and third,” he said. “I looked back and saw they were right behind me and thought ‘this is good.’ ”

Toyota-United Team Director Harm Jansen said he knew a sweep was possible, but not likely due to the quality of sprinters in the field.

“It was a perfect lead-out from setting tempo, to ramping it up and having the guys peel off,” Jansen said. “I think the guys are pretty much getting the feel of each other.”

Toyota-United’s sweep of the top three podium places is a rare accomplishment on the National Race Calendar circuit. It was last achieved on June 18, 2006 when the Health Net presented by Maxxis squad finished 1-2-3 overall at the Nature Valley Grand Prix Stage Race.

Key to accomplishing the impressive finish, Jansen said, was keeping the pace high throughout the 57-lap race.

“Every team knew to have a chance to win, they would have to break away,” he said.

There were plenty of attacks launched in the first half of the race, but none of them stuck thanks to the rapid pace set by Toyota-United. With 20 laps to go, the team put all eight of its riders on the front to prepare for a furious finish.

“With five laps to go, we were riding tempo at 45 kph (29 mph),” Vogels said. “When Chris Wherry took over with a lap to go, the speed was up to 55 kph (34 mph) and I was doing about 60 kph (37 mph) when Ivan and Stevic came around me down the stretch.”

Dominguez’s victory was Toyota-United’s seventh of the season and its third at an NRC event. The Cuban said despite his impressive results to date, there is still room for improvement.

“Right now I’m about 70 percent,” Dominguez said. “I don’t want to get in form too quickly because there are still a lot of races to come.”

Coming into the weekend, Toyota-United led the NRC team standings and had three riders in the top 10 in the individual rankings.

“We go into Redlands with very good morale,” Jansen said, looking ahead to this week’s four-day stage race which begins Thursday.
