Former Telekom soigneur: Doctors of the university of Freiburg delivered epo
Belgian TV channel VRT broadcasted a feature about the use of doping on Sunday. In the Belgian tv programm
Panorama former telekom soigneur Jef D'hont said: "I saw epo for the first time when I was a soigneur with Telekom."
It was the first time D'hont spoke about doping. D'hont continued by saying: "Rider Uwe Ampler took it, against the will of
team manager Walter Godefroot." D'hont: "But the results of Ampler were very good, that's how the epo era started." According
to D'hont doctors of the university of Freiburg were involved as well: "The riders asked themselves for epo, our doctors of
the university of Freiburg delivered it." According to D'hont Bjarne Riis once had a hematocrit level of 64% during the 1996
Tour de France, which was won by the the Danish Telekom rider. "Then I said he [Riis] had to watch out and he started
to get problems. He got rheumatism from epo and other substances he might have taken as well. He was standing stiff of doping."
D'hont said sprinter Erik Zabel did not take epo: "Our sprinter Erik Zabel did not take it. He tried
a small dose once but he was categorical against it. He said he did not need epo."
Walter Godefroot said about organized epo use in the Belgian TV programm: "There was no team - organized
use of epo at Telekom." According to Panorama Godefroot did not want to speak about the past: "We have learned enough already."
But Godefroot did say he discovered the use of epo and informed the UCI about it.
According to sportwereld.be Quickstep manager Patrick Lefevere reacted on the TV programm by asking the
TV makers a question: "What do you want? Do you want every rider to confess on his knees?"
According to various professors riders like Gert Steegmans, Nick Nuyens and Tom Boonen do
not take epo. Their blood values are normal and their developement was natural.
