01.05.2007/ Basso leaves Discovery
On Sunday April 29th Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team member Ivan Basso requested a meeting with General
Manager Bill Stapleton and Sports Director Johan Bruyneel. At the meeting Basso asked to be released from his contract, effective
immediately, citing personal reasons related to the re-opened investigation by the Italian Olympic Committees (CONI). At the
conclusion of the meeting Bruyneel and Stapleton granted the request and have taken the appropriate steps to formally release
him from the Team.
“This was a very difficult decision, for me and my family, but I think it is the right thing to do.
Johan, Bill and my teammates have always believed in me and shown me great respect. This decision is my way of showing them
that same respect,” stated Basso. “The Team is trying to find a new sponsor and win bike races, and my situation
is a distraction to both of those goals. It is important that everyone knows this was 100% my decision. Nobody asked me to
leave. I am grateful to all of the staff and riders and wish them the best of luck.”
In October 2006, the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) officially shelved the Basso case following a recommendation
by CONI. However, early last week CONI re-opened the investigation which dates back to July 2006 when Basso was kept from
competing at the Tour de France. Tailwind Sports subsequently asked Basso not to compete until more information was available.
Basso is scheduled to appear before the CONI on Wednesday May 2nd.
“Ivan’s request was unexpected and he was very emotional, but adamant, about his decision to be
released. We spoke with him at length before granting his request. Although he was only on our Team for a short time he was
a great leader and a very well respected and selfless teammate. I, along with the entire Team, wish him the best,” commented
Johan Bruyneel.
Team Discovery Channel is without a title sponsor at the end of 2007 and Tailwind Sports General Manager Bill
Stapleton is optimistic about the Team’s future even without Basso.
“Ivan was a great addition to our Team and I am very sad to see him go. He was one of our leaders and
we expected big things from him this season, however, this Team has 15 wins in 2007 and we have great depth and talent on
our roster. We will continue to win and be competitive in all of our races, including the Tour De France,” commented
General Manager Bill Stapleton. “When we signed Ivan, all the necessary governing authorities had cleared him. He deserved
a Team and we had always wanted to sign him. We did our due diligence and we have no regrets.”

Rabobank recap Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Not a top-five ranking, but again a very prominent role. In his final Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Michael Boogerd was again one
of the most exciting cyclists to watch. For a long time it seemed as if the captain of the Rabo cycling team was definitely
the equal of his traditional competitors: Valverde, Bettini, Rebellin, Schleck and Di Luca. Some of them turned out to be
a little bit more explosive in the finale. Danilo di Luca won after initiating an attack with Frank Schleck. Thomas Dekker
triedt, but was not able to join them. Boogerd passed the finish line in sixth place.
Team leader Erik Breukink could live with the results. "You know that you do not have a super favorite in your team. And,
when you analyze the progress of the stage, one must conclude that there were not a lot of moments to force a breakthrough.
Hence, you will just need to accept the results," said Breukink, who had again seen a very brave Boogerd, performing close
or even at the same level of all the other world-class cyclists. "There is always one rider who is more explosive. The differences
are small, but the differences that are created in the finale are usually caused by explosiveness."
Exciting and tough The finale of La Doyenne was again thrilling and extremely tough. Until the fifty
kilometer mark from the finish line, four escapees had been dominating the race. They managed to increase their maximum lead
to more than eighteen minutes. With a long pursuit, the favorite teams were able to capture the escapees before the start
of the decisive phase. But, this meant that, for a significant part of the race, a real battle between the favorites failed
to occur. Even on La Redoute, where the battle usually kicks off, nothing happened.
For a moment it looked as if Paolo Bettini and Michael Boogerd were going to be the first to attack, but when all favorites
were able to neutralize the initiated attacks by first Paolo Bettini and later Michael Boogerd, the two decided not to hit
the pedals anymore. Only a few kilometers later did the bomb explode. Stefan Schumacher, him again, took the initiative for
a long escape. The German winner of The Amstel Gold Race was joined by six other rides, with, among others, Karsten Kroon.
Schumacher solely sought adventure again later.
"The only mistake we made was that we did not have a representative in that group," confessed Breukink. "Pieter Weening
was then forced to put out all the stops, and he succeeded very well. But, it should not have been necessary." The attackers
were then one-by-one captured by the group of favorites. Schumacher was the last one. He gave up on the last-but-one climb,
the Saint Nicholas. An acceleration by Michael Boogerd was parried by Bettini. A breakaway attempt by Schleck and Di Luca
was more successful.
Prominent role Thomas Dekker Thomas Dekker placed a counterattack on a less steeper climb, but he could
not reduce the 8-second gap between him and the two leaders. Dekker hit the breaks during the final kilometer when it appeared
that it was going to be impossible to reach the two up front. He was, nevertheless, still admired for his efforts by his team
leader. Breukink: "Thomas's counterattack was the right move to make. It was not going to be easy, but it did not keep him
from giving it a go. It is a sign that he is feeling better again. He has shown a lot during the past week in the Ardennes.
Of course, certain things could be improved, but Thomas is on the right track."
Breukink's reaction to Boogerd's performance was brief and to the point. "Admirably good again. He is always there when
he needs to. It is just a shame that some riders were just a little more explosive."

Ale - Jet wins Lotto-Tour
Alessandro Petacchi has repeated last year's success and won the Lotto-Tour
again. The last stage over about 182 kilometers from Osterode to Göttingen was won by Heinrich Haussler of Team Gerolsteiner.
He won the bunch sprint before Gerald Ciolek (T-Mobile) and Aaron Kemps (Astana).
„Big thanks to my team for
the great work. Today we had to work more than we thought,” said Alessandro Petacchi after his second success in Lower
Saxony. A break of 13 riders, among them the three Gerolsteiner-pros Volker Ordowski, Sven Krauss, and Matthias Russ as well
as André Greipel and Linus Gerdemann of T-Mobile, escaped on the first climb classification after 19 kilometers. They established
a gap of 3:15 minutes, then the gap started to shrink. Slowly first, although three teams with Milram, Rabobank and Skil Shimano
worked at head of the main group.
Petacchi fights for overall win
Alessandro Petacchi led the smaller
peloton in the final lap to catch the last five escapees with Linus Gerdemann. “That was very hard work for us today,”
Petacchi, who was contented with rank 20 in the bunch sprint, said. "In the finale there was no power left,” he continued.
The stage through the Harz was won by Heinrich Haussler, followed by Gerald Ciolek and Aaron Kemps. Erik Zabel, who finally
was on Alessandro Petacchi's side with Alberto Ongarato, finished sixth.
„I didn't want to go into the break
because I thought it was too dangerous on this longs stage. I counted on my team,” declared Petacchi, who wanted to
defend his yellow jersey with all power. “Now I’m happy that it was enough. This year it was harder than last
year.” In the final overall classification the Milram-pro he is first after the Australian Graeme Brown and Gerald Ciolek.
Erik Zabel finished the Lotto-Tour fifth.
After the podium ceremony Alessandro Petacchi talked to the audience and
thanked his team once again: "They performed great here. I’m very proud of this team who allowed me to win this tour
again.”
