Omloop wins Gullegem Koerse

The Belgian Geert Omloop (Jartazi-Promo Fashion) has won yesterdays Belgian regional race Gullegem Koerse. Omloop was the fastest of a select lead group and beat Glenn D'Hollander (Chocolade Jacques) and David Boucher (Landbouwkrediet-Tönnisteiner).

Gil Suray (Unibet.com) hit a post during the race and was taken to hospital. "Suray just has a light concussion and will be back on his feet within a few days", said Lucien Van Impe, Unibet.com team leader.
The Pole Maciej Ulanowski (Unibet.com Continental Team) crashed in his first Belgian race. Ulanowski has grazes all over his body and broke his bike.

Andy Schleck needs a break

It was originally planed for Andy Schleck to go to USA to race this week, but after the hard battles in Giro d'Italia the young luxembourger needs a break from the racing schedule.

"I have been through a lot these past three weeks and I need to calm down a little bit after all this attention," explains Schleck.

"My next assignment will be the national championship and after that I will be going to training camp in July to build up for the automn."

Astana for Tour of Luxemburg

The Tour of Luxemburg will be contested from June 6 until June 10, 2007. The Prologue will be held in the city of Luxemburg itself. Over five days a hilly circuit awaits the contestants, with a final arrival in the capital of Luxemburg.

Of the Astana Cycling Team members who will take part in this challenge, Benoît Joachim should be particularly mentioned, since he will almost race through his own front yard. The Luxemburger finished second in 2000 and fourth in 2001 and will be accompanied by cyclists like Igor Abakoumov (BEL) and the sprinter Aaron Kemps (AUS).

Astana for Tour of Luxemburg: Igor Abakoumov (BEL), Gregory Rast (SUI), Koen De Kort (NED), Benoît Joachim (LUX), Aaron Kemps (AUS), Alexey Kolessov (KAZ) and Yevgeny Sladkov (KAZ).

Sports Director: Alexander Shefer.

Villa, Bono & Bruseghin re-sign with Lampre-Fondital

Pleasant confirmations for Lampre-Fondital after the Giro d’Italia. In fact the group of cyclists that has already signed the extension of the contract with the team of Giuseppe Saronni becomes lager: the riders that has recently signed the extension for two years are the sprinter Danilo Napolitano, winner of Lido di Camaiore stage at this years Giro; Marzio Bruseghin winner of the time trial of Oropa in the pink race; Patxi Vila, 15th in the overall standing in Giro; Matteo Bono, winner of two Pro Tour races in this season. Moreover, Paolo Tiralongo and Daniele Righi will soon sign new contracts.
Soon three young cyclists of good qualities will be added to these riders and to the other athletes that have already confirmed their militancy in Lampre-Fondital: in July Roberto Longo and Mauro Santambrogio will join Lampre-Fondital, while Marco Bandiera will join the Lampre-Fondital team from August.

Lampre-Fondital for Memorial Marco Pantani

The first race after the Giro d'Italia for the Lampre-Fondital squad will be the Memorial Pantani, scheduled on Saturday the 9th of June; directed by Fabrizio Bontempi, the team will be composed by the following athletes: Ballan, Bono, Bruseghin, Corioni, Gavazzi, Napolitano. In the staff there will be the masseurs Benvenuti and Borgognoni and the mechanics Cambiè and Valli.
"It would be great repeating the victory obtained last year thanks to Bennati," Bontempi explained. "We have Ballan, with an increasing form, and Bruseghin, great at the Giro, that could aim to a good result."

Helpful bus driver picks up Milram-riders

After the first stage of the Bayern-Rundfahrt from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Gundelfingen Team Milram was accommodated in a hotel in the nearby Dillingen. But the way to the hotel turned out to be more difficult than expected. In Dillingen the bus suddenly was jammed and in order to be in the hotel on time for massage and dinner, the Milram-riders started to walk.

On their way the seven pros had good luck. The driver of a city bus saw them on the side of the street and stopped immediately to ask them for autographs. The riders took their chance to ask the bus driver for the exact way to the hotel. It turned out that the driver’s route led directly to the hotel. He didn’t hesitate for a second and gave the guys a lift.

Both sides were happy after this uncommon encounter. The Milram-pros didn’t have to walk the long way to the hotel, and the bus dirver was happy about his prominent passengers.

Saunier Duval - Prodir for Euskal Bizikleta and Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré - Koldo Gil injured

Continuing with their competition-packed calendar, from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 Saunier Duval - Prodir will take part in the prestigious Basque classic Euskal Bizikleta, featuring four stages in three days in this year´s edition. The roster coached by Joxean "Matxin" Fernández will be José Ángel Gómez Marchante, David de la Fuente, Jesús del Nero, Alberto Fernández de la Puebla, Arkaitz Durán, Javier Mejías, Alberto Benítez, and Francisco Ventoso.

Unfortunately, last year champ Koldo Gil won´t be able to join in, since he hasn´t recovered from a tendon injury in his left knee. This is what he said about the impossibility to defend his title: "As you can imagine, I feel horrible about this, as I haven´t been able to train for eight days. Yesterday I gave it another shot, but I hadn´t been riding for one hour when the pain came back. I´m working with the physiotherapist who helped me with a similar injury last year, and he advised me to rest for five days. But when he saw me again, he said my recovery hadn´t been as good as he´d expected, so I needed more rest. All this seems to be related to an old injury resulting in torn fibres and tendon sheath inflammation, and this is what causes the pain. I don´t want to rush into things; last year I had to stop for one month and a half because I wanted to speed up recovery. To tell you the truth, I feel I´m out of luck. Either I´m not in good shape or I can´t take part in ProTour events for other reasons. The thing is I haven´t been able to ride regularly this season."

Millar and Piepoli go for Dauphiné Libéré
Meanwhile, the 59th edition of UCI ProTour event Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré is kicking off next Sunday, unfolding until Sunday 17. The yellow squad that´ll be part of the race includes leaders Leonardo Piepoli and David Millar, escorted by Iker Camaño, Ángel "Litu" Gómez, Christophe Rinero, Raivis Belohvosciks, Luciano Pagliarini, and Remmert Wielinga. They´ll be directed by Pietro Algeri.

Rabobank Giro d'Italia recap

The final victory in the Giro d'Italia was definitely going to be for Danilo di Luca. The Rabo ProTeam realized after Michael Rasmussen's attack had just failed on Friday, that the spell surrounding the first stage victory in the Italian race would again not be broken in 2007. Both assumptions proved correct. Di Luca deserved every bit of the pink jersey. The Rabo team earned respect mainly through their offensive style or riding during the incredibly tough second part of the Giro. "After we lost our sprinters, we had to look for a new strategy," admitted team leader Adri van Houwelingen. "The guys that remained have executed their assignments perfectly. The team was ambitious in every stage, which deserves respect."

The Rabo team also put out all stops in the tough mountain stages. Michael Rasmussen and Mauricio Ardila demonstrated their skills. Rasmussen was active in nearly all the stages of the final week. Even though the Dane came close to claiming the stage victory on Friday, it still turned out to be an impossible mission.  Van Houwelingen was very clear about Rasmussen: "The best Giro of his career. Knowing that this is a preparation for the Tour, it is admirable that he went on the attack on a daily basis during the final week. He is getting into shape. Of course this does not guarantee that he will repeat or even improve his 2006 Tour performance. But, it is very gratifying to see that things went relatively easy here." Rasmussen will not compete in any other stage races before the start of the Tour.

Ardilla ill
For many outsiders, Mauricio Ardila was again the 'major disappointment' within the team. In spite his active role in two mountain stages, he was again not able to perform up to his maximum ability. Van Houwelingen had a plausible explanation for the disappointing ranking of the small climber. "Our team doctor Geert Leinders is surprised that Mauricio finished the Giro. He caught a severe cold, and many cyclists would have dropped out. We would not have blamed him for that. The fact that he did go on the attack without any serious chance for a good result shows his good attitude. The guy really wants to give it his all every time, but unfortunately things often just do not go his way. Like in this tour."

The other four who finished the Giro were also praised by the team leaders. Van Houwelingen on the four riders:

William Walker
"He rode particularly well during the first part of the stage. When we entered the decisive week, things became a little more difficult for William. He is completely exhausted now. But, when I compare this with the tough time he had in the Vuelta last year, he has improved a lot."

Dmitriy Kozontchuk
"Dmitriy also used up the last ounce of his energy. One could tell that it was his debut in a major tour. With a few highlights along the way. But Walker is, for instance, a much more developed rider in the professional peloton than Kozontchuk."

Pedro Horrillo
"Perdo was one of the most important victims of the major crash at the start of the tour. He suffered from a very annoying back injury and it looked as if he was going to drop out. What goes for Ardila, goes for him too. Many others would have abandoned the race. Somewhat inconspicuous, but he still manages to easily 'digest' such a tour."

Koos Moerenhout
"Koos was clearly the best and most ambitious of our three veterans. He never ran into problems during the final week. He had a strong performance in final time trial. The way he competed during the last week, that is how it should be. That is why we added him to the team."

Setback
The largest setback was our failing group of sprinters. "Our biggest ambition this tour was to win a stage. We had a very good set of riders to accomplish this with Graeme Brown, Max van Heeswijk, and Léon van Bon, and with additional support from Pedro Horrillo. But, it never really led to the desired result," admitted Van Houwelingen. "Of course we quickly lost Brown due to illness. That is a shame, because a couple of top-ten rankings would have been possible. There were, however, numerous other opportunities after that, but we never really used them, also because of the problems Max van Heeswijk experienced with his bronchial tubes. When Léon van Bon abandoned the tour, we knew we could just forget about our chances in the sprint."

Does the mood of disappointment still prevail? Van Houwelingen: "Of course we are not happy that we did not won a stage, because then the Giro would have been very successful. We had opportunities to do this with the initial team that we lined up. Later on, we did not have as many opportunities, but the team performed well. The six remaining riders had the most active role in the Giro for the Rabo team in years. We were not anonymous. I tried to make sure that the riders would use their ambitions and that went well. They were a strong collective."

What about Van Houwelingen himself? Did he enjoy his Giro debut. "It is a wonderful tour with heroic mountain stages and fierce competition. It was great that I got to experience all that. If they ask me now whether I would want to return here again next year, I would immediately say yes." And then smiling: "But we do take Robert Gesink with us."
