The confusion about the statements of the Swiss cycling federation are continuing to grow. Cyclingheroes reported last
week about the confusing statement and Jan Ullrich reacted on his website on the announcement of Swiss cycling. Ulrich stated
on Saturday : "I will defend myself against the continuing character assassination campaign." The statement on Ullrichs homepage
continues with: "Actually, so far no proceeding against Jan Ullrich has been opened." The statement confirms what we reported
last week: the statement of Swiss Cycling is pretty confusing, some of our sources told us that one could say it's almost
misleading.
But president of the Swiss cycling federation, Lorenz Schäfli managed to make it even more confusing. Schäfli told German
daily newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" on Saturday: "It's taking a long time," but, "We won't let it simply fall
from the table," Schäfli seems to be convinced that there is enough evidence: "if you take the trouble to look for
it." However Schäfli was also quoted by German daily newspaper "Bild", as saying: "Ullrich could have ridden in Lombardi,
if he had a team," according to "Bild", Schäfli also said: "Under sports law there will be no proceeding against Ullrich."
On Saturday German daily newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung" published a story about allegedly "new evidence"
in the affair which was presented by a "round of experts". However the online edition of Süddeutsche didn't published
the story, the online editors prefered to quote German newsagency DPA instead of citing their own staff.
Later that day, the online edition of German weekly magazin "Der Spiegel", published a story that the "round of
experts" actually was constituted of German anti-doping crusader and professor Werner Franke and his lawyer.
The claim of "Der Spiegel" seems to be the reason for the vague term "round of experts" that was used by "Süddeutsche".
Franke lost a lawsuit against Jan Ullrich and is not allowed to repeat his allegations against Ullrich about alleged payments
to Fuentes from the former Tour de France winner or face a fine of 250.000 Euros.
